I'm usually not a very good civ2
strategist, but this is one scenario where I was able to conquer the
entire map. It is quite possible to wipe every other civilization off the
map (with the exception of the Spanish and Neutrals) by the end of the Jan
1942 turn.
This is how I did it.
General Strategy:
Basically, you must devise a plan where the other civs will be completely
unable to effectively counter-attack you. If you can do this, winning the
war is only a matter of time. Note: You don't necessarily have to
conquer everything in this particular order. Conquering France:
You start the game poised to attack France, you have an alliance with
every civ except for the French and Allies to prevent you from attacking
them early and vice-versa. Attack all close cities with your planes, most
cities only have Homeguard's in them, so conquering them will be a snap.
Ignore Metz, it has several fortification units in it and conquering that
city is too difficult at first. Lille has one fortification in it, but you
must capture that city to surround the BEF at Dunkerque. Dunkerque has
several planes in and around it, so you should attack them with Me-109's,
and once they are destroyed, then empty Dunkerque with your Stukas. Try to
capture Amiens, Caen, St. Lo, Cherbourg, Brest, and St. Nazarine on your
first turn, you can reach them with your panzers if you use the airbases
as railroads between cities. Attack Paris from Caen, as Paris has two
fortifications in front of it and only two homeguards in the city itself.
As you conquer France, ignore Metz and Limoges, as these cities have
Fortifications and you should conquer them last when you have nothing else
to direct your resources to attacking.
How to easily win the Naval Battle:
See those ships stacked in that fortification off the coast of Northern
Britain? All of the British Navy is in that fortification. 14 Ships ready
to make operation Sea Lion a living hell. You must destroy them ALL, and
here's how, in two easy steps. 1. On the Allies first turn, every ship
will move out of that spot, and will be in two easy to dispose of stacks
somewhere between Norway and Britains east coast. Position at least 2
U-Boats around where you think they might end up (or, if you want, save
the game during the first turn and load it back up so you know where the
stacks will be moved to). 2. On your second turn, attack both stacks with
your positioned U-Boats! You have now wiped out the entire British Navy,
congratulations. This may not work if you attack any cities around the
stack of ships on the first turn, so don't do it.
The Battle of Britain:
On turn 1, rush build a landing craft in Stavanger. On turn 2, rush build
a landing craft in Dunkerque. Move as many planes as possible to cities
like Dunkerque and Amiens, you want the least amount of move points
possible to reach the British cities. You only have two types of planes
for attacking, but with these two, you can kill any unit defending a
British city. Your first targets should be Portsmouth, Plymouth, and
Aberdeen. Begin your attack on Turn 3 at the earliest, you have several
bombers in Norway, and Aberdeen has no Anti-Aircraft defenders in the
city, move as many fallschrim's and stormtroopers into that city, the
British should never counter-attack you. Attacking the southern cities is
a little tricky... Follow these steps after you've got all your planes in
position.
1. Save game.
2. Attack with one of your planes and see what unit defends. If a British
plane defends the attack (a Hurricane or a Spitfire), then you'll want to
attack with a Me-109, which should win against these two units. If an
invisible AA gun is defending, you have two options,
A. Attack with every Stuka you have and hope you get a few lucky hits and
it dies (this strategy can be costly, so save before you do it).
B. Naval bombard the city with a cruiser, you should win, but also save
before you do this too.
If some kind of infantry defends then you'll definitely win the battle and
are very close to emptying the city.
3. Reload game and attack with suitable unit to minimize casulaties taken.
4. Take the city with either a fallschrim or a transport full of units.
5. Move Me-109's into the city to protect against any air counter-attacks
the British throw at you, they should have no ground units for attacking
other than infantry.
6. Repeat with other cities, only use fallschrim's to take the city if you
can't move a transport full of units to the city in one turn.
In North England, keep shipping units from Norway to Aberdeen and you can
easily take some cities with a combination of boming with Ju-88's and
cruiser naval bombardment.
Note: You might want to put off taking London for a while. At least make
sure it's the very last city in Britain you take. Why? Once you take
London, the USA declares war on Germany early and flying fortresses start
appearing everywhere! This'll cause a big problem in the Middle East
later.
Conquering Malta: Relatively easy, the Me-109's in sicily should be able
to empty Malta of its fortifications, then you can build a transport in
Siracusa and take it easily.
Conquering French East Africa: This is so easy I don't know why I'm
discussing it... The French cities in East Africa only have homeguards as
defenders, even in densely populated Casablanca! You can take every city
with naval bombardment or just throwing light tanks at them.
Conquering Gibraltar: This is actually one of the most difficult to
capture cities in the game. Gibraltar has three fortifications, is
built on a Mountain square, and is far away from Conquerable cities,
meaning your planes won't easily reach it. Try moving 5+ 105mm guns to the
square north of it, plus a lot of tanks, plus have cruisers and p.
battleships (and maybe an actual battleship) nearby to finish off what the
105mm guns and tanks don't finish, make sure one tank hasn't moved yet so
you have something to take the city with.
Conquering Greece: You start off with a few tanks near this area, take
Thessaloniki with these, and send reinforcements if necessary. On the
first turn, Thessaloniki has no units in it, but it's protected by a lot
of English infantries. You should be able to take it with the three light
tanks in Tirane, then the infantries will have their support cut and
they'll disband. To conquer Athens, move a fallschrim to Thessaloniki, and
either move some cruisers right outside the greece cities, or rush-build
one in Thessaloniki and empty Athens with it, and the other two cities
with the other cruisers if available. Take Athens with the fallschrim and
the fortifications in front of
the pass will disband, allowing easy access to Greece.
Conquering Crete: After you take Athens, three fallschrims will appear
next to Crete. If there
are any cruisers nearby, use them to empty crete instead of the
fallschrims.
Move a fallschrim to occupy both squares west of Crete before taking the
city so you don't have so many resisting pockets appear.
Conquering Iceland: This should be done once you've secured Britain and
destroyed just about every Allied ship in the atlantic between Britain and
the USA and Canada. Build a transport in Aberdeen and put a few
units in it, move it and any other ship that can bombard a little way away
from Reykjavik. Then empty it and take it on the same turn.
Conquering the USA and Canada: Use same strategy as above, but be extra
careful not to let on an attack is coming, otherwise they'll probably
build a flying fortress or two to attack your nearby ships. Just remember
they won't build attacking units until they know you're coming for them.
Destroying Allied Naval forces in the Mediterrainain: Basically, you have
to get lucky. There'll likely be a few stacks of ships moved around
southern turkey and near Crete, try to kill them with your destroyers, as
you need the cruisers and battleships for naval bombardment.
Conquering Alexandria, the Middle East, and the British Colonies: You
start off in this area with two light tanks against a line of British
Infantry and Matilda tanks. Don't attack, instead draw back and wait in
Tobruk, the tanks should all withdraw instead of attacking you (Ha! Stupid
AI...). Ship some more advanced tanks, strong naval units (cruisers,
battleships, etc.), other tanks from African cities, and ESPECIALLY
aircraft to this area any way you can! Airlifts are good, so is
transporting units from Italy/Greece/Crete to Africa.
Once you do this, empty el alamein with your naval units, then move a tank
right next to it, but don't take it yet. SAVE YOUR GAME. Now take the
city. If "Tank Defences" doesn't show up in your list of
City Improvements, then load your game and take it again until it does.
Why? Because you can not afford to have this city destroyed. It'll most
likely have a population of one after you take it, and if it's destroyed,
you'll have no way for your early planes to attack Alexandria. There are
no settlers, so there's no way to rebuild it if it is destroyed. Ok, now
begin concentrating forces in El Alamein, attack with a combination of
naval bombardment and Aircraft you shipped/rush-built there, with any
luck, they didn't build many AA batteries and you can take it easy.
Following these steps, you can take Alexandria before Rommel arrives with
the Afrika Korps! Once you take Alexandria, an event will cause Spain to
declare war on the Allies, but this is only a morale victory, as they
aren't strong enough to make a significant impact in the war.
Taking the rest of the cities (Cairo, Suez, Gaza, etc.) should be easy,
unless you took London already. If you did, then most likely Flying
Fortresses will bomb the hell out of you from the Middle East and you'll
have a harder time. Either way, use the same strategy, a combination of
naval bombardment and air raids to empty the city, all the while shipping
and airlifting more units to take out whatever's left, you will eventually
take every Allied city in this area, including Iraq and the "To Brit.
Colony" cities.
Conquering Yugoslavia: This is a real pushover, just move Stukas and tanks
where needed and you should be able to conquer the whole country in one or
two turns.
Conquering the Soviet Union: This is so vast I split it up into many
parts.
Preparation: Stockpile tanks, and aircraft in cities closest to the Front
(Krakow, Warsaw, Konigsberg, Constanta. Remember, the invasion commences
June, 1941!
Attacking: The Soviets have nothing but infantry, light tanks, T 34'43s,
and yak-9 fighters. And you must see to it that it stays that way. Any of
these (with the possibe exception of yak-9's, which you should attack with
Me-109's) can be killed with Stukas, so take advantage of that.
Dealing with the fortifications: Just about every other city in the Soviet
Union has at least one fortification unit and is very hard to kill.
Here's how you should attack them. Build 105mm guns and use these to
attack cities that are connected to germany with paved roads to empty them
of fortifications, once you've done that, stop making them as the time it
takes to travel down unpaved roads isn't worth it.
Minsk, Kiev, and Odessa should all have their fortifications destroyed
with your 105mm guns.
To destroy the fortifications in other cities, just throw whatever's
available at it. Stukas, Me-109s, Panzer IVs, Panthers,
Stromtroopers,Ju-88's, etc. etc. Usually one of those units will work well
while the others fail miserably. Save your game before launching the
offensive, so you can reload if the attack doesn't go well.
Smolensk: Do NOT capture Smolensk. It should be either the last, or 2nd to
last Soviet city you capture. Why? Once you capture Smolensk, the Soviets
get the technology to build T 34'41 tanks, and life will be more difficult
on the eastern front. It has two fortifications.
Murmansk Area: Build a brigade consisting of light tanks, some panzers,
fallschrims, and stromtroopers in Norway and move them to Vardo. Murmansk
and all cities connected to it are relatively lightly defended, and you
should be able to capture Murmansk, Kirovsk, Arkhangelsk, Vologda, and
Rybinsk with them if you keep shipping new tanks out from Norway. None of
these cities have fortifications.
Leningrad: You need to either clear out one fortification square adjacent
to Leningrad, build a transport in Talinn and use it to take Leningrad by
sea, "sneak" around the fortifications and enter through the
northeast square with a unitthat ignores ZOC, or move a fallschrim to
novgorod or pskov and take it by paradrop. The area around Leningrad is
heavily fortified, but the city itself is only protected by infantry.
Empty the city with Stukas, cruisers, or both.
Tula: Has two fortifications and is your gateway to Moscow.
Moscow: Moscow is protected by means that there is no direct road to it
other than from the north, which is not an easy place to send your troops
from. It's best to send your units fron Tula via the river to the paved
roads around it. Moscow has a whopping EIGHT fortifications in it, make
sure you have enough troops to destroy them all.
Dneprotovsk: Has only one fortification, which I just thought I'd mention.
Kharkov: Three fortifications.
Rostov: FIVE fortifications, the ability to build more, and is very tough
to take because you can't easily reach it with your tanks because of the
"wall" of fortifications blocking the direct path from
Dneprotovsk.
Sevastopol: Two fortifications, plus a wall of fortifications surrounding
it you can't easily sneak through. Paradropping isn't an option, but you
can still try taking the city by shipping a few units from constanta vai
transport. Air raids from odessa and constanta are your only chance of
emptying sevastopol itself if you don't clear out the fortification square
directly north of it.
Maykop: Easy to take, you can sneak through the fortification line in
front of it with a unit that ignores ZOC, or aircraft. The city itself
contains only infantry and should be easy to take once you get your forces
there.
Grozny: Has 4 fortifications, the ability to build more, and is your easy
gateway to E. Stalingrad, it has a VERY high production rate.
W. Stalingrad: Had no fortifications, but once you capture it, make sure
you can stack a lot of units in it AND you have "tank defences",
as E. Stalingrad gets a lot of units to counter-attack you with the next
turn.
E. Stalingrad: Attack E. Stalingrad with a combination of sneaking through
the fortification wall in front of it from W. Stalingrad and attacking
from Grozny. It has no fortifications.
Saratov: Has two fortifications and should be what you capture after
conquering both parts of Stalingrad.
That's about it... the rest of the Soviet cities should be relatively easy
to capture.
Misc Tips: You have several units that if destroyed, will make some of
your better units obsolete. Things like the Ploesti Oil Facilities in
Ploesti and the Work Camp Dora outside Krakow. Although it shouldn't be
necessary, protect these and other Factories scattered everywhere from
being bombed. 88mm guns seem to be your best defenders, but they can be
killed by strong units, like flying fortresses. Remember that they make
good attacking units too. The allies receive spies in certain areas of
France and Norway every turn. Killing the ones in France are easy,
but the ones in Norway have a high defense rating and are usually over
mountain terrain, so try to kill them with JU-88 bombers.
Final Notes: A great scenario, if a little buggy. I'm shocked I could
develop a working strategy for it.
I don't think I left anything out, but if you have questions, direct them
